I was traveling from work and searched this place out looking for a great steak and Old Fashioned. Love the dark New England ambience. Drinks and food were very worth it. My steak was quality and done right. The bartender mixed a remarkably good drink. If you're in the area check it out.

Absolutely wonderful service at the bar. Drinks came fast. We enjoyed our Beet Berry salad. & the meatball appetizer to share. Also split the impossible burger. Everything tasted absolutely delicious . Flavorful and fresh. Reasonably priced. Favorite part was getting a tour of the "fresco painting done by Edward Hicks. Found behind the walls in a side dining room. *Recently restored . This is one of 7 fresco/murals". Per NICK THE MANAGER. (He knew a lot about the famous painter of 'A Peaceable Kingdom '. Very very awesome evening. I loved the tour of the art and local history!!
This is perhaps the only true bar in Newtown. Not a sports bar or a gastropub. This is an old school dive bar, but in a good way! This bar usually attracts an older crowd. We have had food here which is shockingly good. The opportunities to improve include: live music is too loud at times for how close they are set-up in relation to the bar. Also, the menu could offer more and be more varied.
Had dinner there tonight which is Thanksgiving with my son , his wife, and my two grandsons one 4 and one 2. Our reservation was a last minute decision when our original plan was derailed because of illness on the other side of the family Temperance House squeezed our party of 6 in at 4:30pm We were seated on time, the service was great, the atmosphere is warming and the food was absolutely delicious Many thanks to the staff at TH as it was an absolute pleasure.
The Temperance House has ambiance, a friendly staff and good food. I will say I really like the atmosphere. Kind of a laid back but cool vibe, kind of like upscale trying to disguise itself as homey type farm thing. Food is good. Nothing pushing limits, but rather the kind of food that you greet as an old friend. All in all, I would recommend here.
